Pillar (cut-down version) (2025)
Pumice stone, wood, audio (Marrow by Ursula K. Le Guin)
Description
Pillar (Cut-down version) consists of a single column embedded with pumice stones. At its base, smaller pumice stones are scattered. From within the column, a voice recites Marrow by Ursula K. Le Guin in both Vietnamese and English. Audiences are invited to walk across the pumice stones to approach the pillar and listen. Pillar was exhibited at the O At Oh Art Contemporary Art Festival 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in July 2025.
Pumice is a volcanic rock composed of coarse, porous glass. It is formed when gas-saturated molten magma erupts, similar to a carbonated beverage, and cools rapidly, trapping bubbles that solidify into foam-like stone. The glassy material may take the form of fibers, threads, or thin walls between empty cavities. Its low density is due to the numerous air-filled pores, allowing it to float on water and making it fragile. (Geology Science 2023)
